Anthemion Sitting Room
Greek anthemion ceiling ornament designed to complement a period wallpaper in a Victorian sitting room.
This sitting room is part of the same Haight-Ashbury residence as the Neo-classical Sitting Room next door. The ornament draws on the Greek anthemion — the honeysuckle-and-palmette motif that runs through so much of neoclassical decorative art — rendered here in a warm beige tone chosen to harmonize with the existing wallpaper. A continuous frieze runs along the cornice line, with corner medallions and a central ceiling ornament completing the composition.
