Art Nouveau Sitting Room

Art Nouveau wall treatment with sinuous line work in warm ochre tones, period furnishings and decorative plates

A complete decorative environment — walls, ceiling, and floor cloth — inspired by the organic line work of Victor Horta.

This upstairs sitting room in the same Haight-Ashbury residence is the most ambitious of the series: a total environment in which walls, ceiling, and floor cloth are unified by a single continuous vocabulary of sinuous Art Nouveau line work. The design draws directly on Victor Horta — the great Belgian architect whose interiors dissolved the boundary between structure and ornament, letting the line flow uninterrupted from floor to ceiling. Here that principle is carried through in paint: the same whiplash curves that animate the walls continue across the ceiling and descend again to the floor cloth, so the room reads as one coherent composition rather than a collection of decorated surfaces.
