Faux Stone Stairway and Hall

Plain plaster walls transformed into dressed limestone through trompe l'oeil stonework.

The stairway and hall of this residence were painted to simulate limestone — the cut-stone masonry of classical architecture. Working from observation of real stone, Adrian Card built up the illusion through careful layering of tone and texture, with painted joints and surface variation that read convincingly as dressed stone in the raking light of the stairwell.
