About the Painting
The quince — golden, fragrant, and slightly rough-skinned — was a favourite subject of the Dutch and Flemish still-life painters, prized for the challenge it posed: its irregular surface catches light differently from the smooth skin of an apple or pear, and its warm yellow-green tones demand careful observation.
The Delft bowl grounds the composition in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch cabinet painting, where fine ceramics served both as luxury objects and as vehicles for the painter's virtuosity. The blue-and-white glaze provides a cool counterpoint to the warm fruit above.
Painted in oil on Masonite, the panel support allows for the fine detail and smooth blending characteristic of the early Netherlandish technique.
