Sri Yantra Panharmonium — Microtonal Instrument with Thangka Mandala

Instruments

Sri Yantra Panharmonium

Sri Yantra mandala painted on the soundboard of the Panharmonium
Panharmonium designed by the composer and built by Owen Daly. Decoration by Adrian Card.

A commission from a composer who works in microtones — an instrument of his own design, built by Owen Daly, decorated with the ancient Sri Yantra mandala.

When approached to decorate this unique microtonal instrument, I researched the pigments available to traditional Tibetan Thangka painters and used only those in painting the mandala. The deep blue-black is indigo; the coral-red is genuine vermilion; the white is made from ground oyster shells; and the luminous yellow is gamboge, a unique resin pigment from Cambodia used by Thangka painters for centuries.
